Has the mission of JPS changed?

Since its founding in 1888, JPS’s mission has been to enhance Jewish literacy through the publication of books of enduring worth. As the oldest Jewish publisher in the country, our mission continues. JPS books remain indispensable “go-to” references for rabbis, teachers, and readers of Jewish Bible, history, culture and thought. Our works, often regarded as the “gold standard” of Jewish publishing, present the highest level of academic scholarship, yet are written in an accessible manner. Indeed, “accessible scholarship” remains our calling card.

How will the mission be expressed in the future?

The JPS Tanakh remains the most widely read English translation of the Hebrew (Jewish) Bible in the world and is available in a variety of editions. Our award-winning JPS Bible Commentary series continues into its fourth decade. Significant projects in Bible studies, history, philosophy, and folklore are ongoing. JPS continues to actively seek to acquire and develop dynamic new book manuscripts in these areas by scholars, rabbis, and other leaders in the learning community. Read our mission and vision statement.

How has the business model of JPS recently changed?

In 2012, culminating a yearlong search, JPS entered into a publishing partnership with the University of Nebraska Press. UNP now assumes the business side of JPS operations: printing, warehousing, fulfillment, licensing, sales and marketing all our books so that we can focus on what we do best: the development and sponsorship of new manuscripts. JPS is today what is called a “content only” entity.
