Dear Friends,
One hundred years ago JPS published its first translation of the Hebrew Bible. The Holy Scriptures (1917) became the translation of record for the American Jewish community for the next half-century. Finding a place in Jewish homes across America, it sold in the hundreds of thousands, and accompanied Jewish GIs in two World Wars. If you are of a certain age, like me, you have a treasured copy of The Holy Scriptures on your bookshelf. In celebration of this milestone anniversary we are sending you this special newsletter.
Don’t miss the expressly commissioned article “Centennial Celebration” by Professor Leonard Greenspoon of Creighton University. Professor Greenspoon is our leading authority on this subject, and author of our forthcoming: Jewish Bible Translations: A History as well as The JPS Bible Commentary—Joshua. His personal tribute to the scholars behind the 1917 translation is also a revealing behind-the-scenes look at their work.
To deepen your knowledge, we enthusiastically invite you to a unique event: “The Future of American Jewish Bible Translation: A Bible Symposium in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the JPS Holy Scriptures.”
